MERCI’s mission, encapsulated in its acronym Meaningful Experiences & Relationships through Community Inclusion, reflects a dedication to serving neurodiverse individuals of all abilities. Through its hallmark three programs and residential services, MERCI is committed to ensuring that every participant and resident possesses the inherent right to live a quality life of their own choosing, fostering meaningful integration into their community.
The organization adopts person-centered plans tailored to individual skills and interests, with provisions for individualized behavior support plans if needed. Participants and residents actively engage in community events and volunteer opportunities, promoting a sense of belonging. The longevity of many participants and staff, spanning decades, speaks to the development of an atmosphere at MERCI that resembles a close-knit family, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment.
MERCI, founded in 1955, has a rich history rooted in the commitment of parents and service clubs to provide educational resources for children with developmental disabilities in the absence of available services. Initially established to cater to children, MERCI’s mission evolved as many of these individuals continued to be part of the organization into adulthood. The dedication to serving adults with developmental disabilities has been a constant in MERCI’s journey.
Despite challenges in funding, MERCI stands out as one of the few organizations that persistently offers services to individuals with developmental disabilities as they age. The organization remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring that this population experiences a quality life of their own choosing.
Currently extending its reach to 19 cities across Los Angeles County, MERCI collaborates with various regional centers, including East Los Angeles Regional Center, San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center, Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center, and South Los Angeles Regional Center. Alongside home and community-based services, MERCI enhances its support through two residential group homes, providing round-the-clock care to six residents each. This comprehensive approach exemplifies MERCI’s steadfast commitment to addressing the unique needs of adults with developmental disabilities.
In its 69-year history, MERCI has not only provided essential services but has also established strong ties with the communities it serves.
